What Is Emergency First Aid At Work?
Emergency First Aid At Work is an accredited training course that provides candidates with the skills to swiftly, confidently and competently respond to emergency medical situations and preserve the life of the employee involved until an ambulance arrives on scene.
During the course, candidates will get their teeth into practical demonstrations and role-play, engaging practicals using a mannequin and plenty of Q and A opportunities. Designated emergency first-aiders are required to requalify every 3 years so that they can best serve their colleagues and remain compliant with UK health and safety regulations, and refresher courses are recommended annually.
What Does Emergency First Aid At Work Cover?

- Undertaking risk assessments
- Understanding the role of the first-aider. We look at cross-infection prevention, recording incidents and available equipment.
- How to assess the situation so you can respond quickly, safely and competently in an emergency.
- How to administer first to an unconscious employee. This also covers seizures.
- How to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator.
- How to provide emergency first aid to someone who is choking.
- Treating and controlling bleeding wounds.
- Managing shock.
- Providing first aid to minor injuries such as small cuts and grazes, minor burns and splinters.
How Long Does An Emergency First Aid at Work Course Last?
The one-day course is valid for three years. Qualified first aiders should ensure their qualification is renewed prior to the expiry date. Once a certificate expires the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.
How Many People Can We Train At One Time?
The maximum number of candidates on a course would be 12.
How Many First Aiders Do I Need?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions and a difficult one to give a quick answer too! There are no hard and fast rules on the exact number of first aiders a business should have. You need to complete a first-aid needs assessment to help you decide how many first aiders are required. This will take into account all the relevant circumstances of your particular workplace. How Does Emergency First Aid At Work Differ From Other First Aid Courses?
Different courses can be taken in conjunction with EFAW for a more comprehensive qualification. These are:
First Aid At Work
First Aid At Work is a 3-day course that is more extensive and intensive than EFAW. It is designed to provide training enabling qualifying delegates to respond to a wide range of situations, not just those we would call’ emergencies’. Read more about what you’ll gain from the course we run here.
Paediatric First Aid
This two-day course has been specifically designed to meet the criteria set by the Department for Education’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework. Envesca regularly offers this training programme; check out this page for everything you need to know.
The course provides candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to respond to a range of paediatric first aid situations, including assessment of emergencies, unresponsive children, CPR, choking, meningitis, asthma and more.
Combined Courses
For some employers, it makes sense for their staff members to be able to dual qualify in a shorter amount of time. Envesca also offer a 1-day course that covers both Emergency First Aid Work And Emergency Pediatric First Aid so that you can save time and money training your support staff.

What To Expect From Emergency First Aid At Work Training
Accidents are preventable, but they can still happen, so training your staff in emergency first-aid ensures medical emergencies can be dealt with promptly and effectively.
The Emergency First Aid At Work training course is engaging and hands-on. Alongside information-giving and Q and A opportunities, the trainer will give interactive demonstrations, and delegates will get stuck into role-play scenarios specific to your workplace.
Emergency first aid techniques that cover the areas listed previously are learnt as well as practised – both on each other in group work and on dummies – and delegates are assessed by the trainer during the 1-day course.
To successfully qualify, you must pass two assessments. The theory assessment takes the form of multiple-choice questions, and the practical assessment involves demonstrating your newly learned ability to execute several emergency first aid techniques. This includes CPR as well as responding properly and efficiently to someone who is choking.
The Role Of A First Aider At Work
Graduates of certified first aid courses are responsible for taking care of anyone who becomes ill or suffers an injury in the workplace.
The training they have undergone should suitably prepare them with the knowledge, skills, confidence and competence to shoulder responsibilities such as:
- Keeping a record of and maintaining first aid kits and facilities
- Assessing the person who is injured or ill
- Taking charge if someone requires medical attention
- Using first aid supplies and equipment safely to administer appropriate care until the emergency services arrive
- Report the accident appropriately as per the company’s official procedures
How much does an Emergency First Aid at Work Course Cost?
If you attend a public classroom course, the cost ranges from £77.00 + VAT – £140.00 + VAT per person, taking into account the various discount opportunities available. If you decide to book an in-house course for 12 candidates, the cost reduces to around £65.00 + VAT per person.
